Twenty years ago, I retired from the United States Air Force.
Like many people, I thought retirement was the finish line. Looking back, I realize it was actually the beginning of one of the most rewarding chapters of my life.
During my military career, there was always another assignment, another deployment, another responsibility. Like so many of us, I kept telling myself there would be time later.
Then "later" finally arrived.
One of the first things I discovered was that I had spent years dreaming about places far away while overlooking some incredible places close to home.
Growing up in Ohio, I never visited the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. I never toured the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. I didn't even appreciate that Ohio is known as the "Mother of Presidents," producing more U.S. presidents than any other state.
It wasn't until after retirement that I finally experienced many of those places.
That experience taught me something I hadn't expected.
Sometimes we spend so much time looking toward our next destination that we forget to appreciate what's right in front of us.
The same is true in life.
Over the years, I've talked with many retirees, veterans, and friends. The biggest regret I hear isn't about money or careers.
It's hearing someone say:
"I wish I had done it sooner."
I wish we had taken that family vacation.
I wish we had visited our parents more often.
I wish we had explored more while we were healthy.
I wish we had created more memories together.
Those conversations are one of the reasons I've adopted a simple personal theme:
Why Not Now?
If you've been thinking about taking a road trip...
Why not now?
If you've always wanted to visit a museum, national park, or historic town just a few hours away...
Why not now?
If you've been talking about taking your grandchildren on an adventure they'll remember for the rest of their lives...
Why not now?
You don't have to fly across the world to create unforgettable memories.
Some of the best experiences of my life have been discovering places I should have visited years ago, standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon, and diving beneath the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean.
Each one reminded me of something important.
Life moves quickly.
Our health changes.
Our opportunities change.
But the memories we create stay with us forever.
That's why I've become passionate about helping others discover new places, travel smarter, and make the most of the time they have.
Through this blog and my VIP Vacations Newsletter , I'll continue sharing travel stories, destination ideas, practical money-saving tips, and inspiration to help you create more experiences with the people you love.
Because at the end of the day, I don't believe anyone wishes they had bought one more thing.
But many of us wish we had taken one more trip.
Spent one more weekend together.
Created one more memory.
So I'll leave you with one question...
What's one place you've always wanted to visit?
Whatever your answer is...
Why not now?
