I retired from the Air Force 20 years ago. If you'd told me back then how the next two decades would go, I don't think I would have believed you — and honestly, I'm not sure I would have wanted to.
Here's the version of the story most people don't post about:
I lived in my truck. I lived in a homeless shelter. I started businesses that failed — more than once. I went through a divorce. For a long stretch, "travel" meant doing it as cheaply as humanly possible, not because it was a lifestyle choice, but because it was the only kind of travel I could afford.
None of that was on the transition brief.
But that wasn't the end of the story, and it isn't the whole story either. Eventually things turned. I remarried. The vacations look different now. And these days, I spend my time serving veterans — people walking a version of the same road I walked.
If there's one thing those 20 years taught me, it's this: it's more important to help others solve their own problems than to constantly share yours.
That sounds simple, but it took me two decades, a truck, a shelter, a few failed businesses, and a divorce to actually learn it. Early on, I thought sharing my story was the point — look what I went through, look what I survived. And there's a place for that. But the real value came when I stopped centering my own struggle and started asking better questions: What are you dealing with? What do you need to figure out? How can I help you get there faster than I did?
That shift — from "let me tell you what happened to me" to "let me help you with what's happening to you" — changed how I show up for other veterans. It's not about hiding the hard years. It's about not making every conversation about them.
If you're a veteran figuring out what's next, or you're 5, 10, or 20 years into your own version of this — I'd love to hear where you're at.
