Step Up to the Plate and Lead
Anyone can be a follower, but only a few can be a leader – a true leader. A true leader arises naturally out of situations that call for a leader. He is the man that everyone looks to for direction. Whether he wishes to or not, people will follow him. Whether he desires it or not, fate will force him to step up to the plate and lead. Leaders have the guts to dream and the courage to step up to the plate and lead. When someone says “it’s impossible,” he says “let’s see if it can be done.” When someone else says “that’s suicide,” he says “it’s a calculated risk.” Leaders are not afraid to dream big and fail. They’re not afraid to step up to the plate and lead.
Leaders are born out of necessity. When that necessity presents itself, those most ready to step up to the plate and lead naturally become leaders without much protest. For people who are leaderless don’t like a void. They will look to fill that void, and fill it they will – whether that person is competent or not. In the act of looking for a leader, people will look for these things: charisma, power, wealth, skill, courage, and intelligence. Whoever has the most of these things will step up to the plate and lead.
If you want to be a leader, you have to be ready to step up to the plate and lead. If you want people to follow you, you have to display the qualities of a leader. And in order to display those qualities, you have to learn from those who have experienced leading others. Leaders only learn from other leaders. You can’t just say “I’m ready to step up to the plate and lead!” and expect everyone to follow you. You have to prove yourself to them first.
