LISTEN – Before Goal Setting

Before Goal Setting – Listen

 

Sounds kind of dumb, doesn’t it?  After all, we know what does and doesn’t work for us, right?  We’ve all had to struggle and some of us even hat to hit “Rock-Bottom” before learning where we made our mistakes.

What I’m trying to say here is that we MUST learn to communicate our Goals to others so we can get help and encouragement along the way.  But, the first, most-important step in Communication IS Listening.

I know … I know!  Goal Setting is Personal and it should be designed around what we want out of life and our own desires.  Sounds Right!

But, don’t we often set goals around what we want for our friends and loved ones?  Most of want to travel more, make more and have fun more with those closest to us.  So, doesn’t it make sense to ask them what they want that maybe you can work with them so both of you (or your family) can grow and succeed together for a common goal?

Sure, if you’re the only one overweight then you may have to tackle that goal for yourself.  Or, if you are trying to earn a degree to get that perfect Job.  But most goals can be Group-Oriented.  When I took the focus off of myself and started giving more of myself I started growing and being more successful.   Before that I was just spinning my wheels and not getting anywhere.

It’s very important to ask for advice (from someone you respect and trust) while we’re working on your goals.  Then write them down and put them in a conspicuous place where you can see them and keep track of your progress on a regular basis.  Even if you stumble and fail in the beginning, it’s not too late to reevaluate and press on.  But be careful to listen to your gut feeling.  Sometimes we have that feeling that things just aren’t right and we need to stop and refocus on our efforts.  We can’t blindly follow someone else’s goals or wishes.  They must align with ours.

Toastmasters has helped me Listen, Speak and Lead when asked.  The program teaches basic skills in Leadership and Communication (including Listening) through the Art of Public Speaking.  I have learned and grew so much just over the past 3 years since being a member.  And this is one of the best Networking Groups I know of and has my business grow.

Make time to step back and relax and meditate to ensure that you’re sticking with your goals and to make adjustments as necessary.  It’s also very important to constantly be learning a new skill.  It helps keep our minds tuned where they need to be and helps us in our relationships as well as the important Art of Listening.

All the getting ready to get ready does not build a Sales career or a Relationship-Marketing business! What builds a business is finding a lead to put on a List, booking an appointment to give a presentation and making a recommendation that they buy or join! Stop messing around with vision and punch some darn buttons!

 

I recommend a vacation.  Lots of them.  But, a VIP Vacation!
